Dr. Herb Nelson was selected for and awarded the 2016 Government Leadership Service Award at our annual General Membership Meeting.  The amount of time and involvement Dr. Nelson has spent to create positive changes in the industry show his dedication to MMRP and NAOC.  Dr. Nelson has been a government champion for NAOC, supporting the industry from a scientific and funding perspective, even attending the 2016 fly-in in D.C. Dr. Nelson is always the first to volunteer to help and always willing to answer any questions.

Dr. Nelson has been an active member of the MMRP community for many years. He is recognized in the highest regard in the MMRP industry for leadership, professionalism and commitment to advanced geophysical classification technologies.  For many years, he has been a committed supporter of the NAOC through his participation with NAOC committee activities (Technology and Government committees) and organizational events.   He has provided significant contributions, as indicated in the nomination, to the MMRP industry, its professionals and the NAOC.  Dr. Nelson has impacted the industry broadly and has participated in many NAOC functions.

Dr. Nelson has lead the development of several technologies (e.g. classification and underwater geophysics) beneficial to the MMRP industry and has worked cooperatively with stakeholders and NAOC to facilitate the implementation of those technologies. He has traveled the country to present these technologies to many stakeholders and government agencies and answer their questions and concerns.  His ability to listen to industry personnel, perceive the community’s needs  and convene effective working groups has led to important improvements in the way MMRP work is implemented.  He has also contributed to NAOC by regularly briefing the organization’s members on emerging technologies and their state of implementation.
